AFCON 2022: Semi-finals possible for Eagles – Abiodun

Africa Football
(TT) – A former Super Eagles defender, Abiodun Obafemi, is optimistic that the super Eagles will reach the semi-finals of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Cameroon not minding their current abysmal display.

The Atlanta ’96 gold medallist speaking with The PUNCH said such a situation wasn’t the best ahead of the tournament but believed Nigeria have the quality to make it to at least the semi-final.

“It is very unfortunate something like this is happening ahead of the AFCON tournament but this kind of preparation isn’t something new to us as Nigerians because most of the time when we prepare very well we hardly perform.

“I am very sure that the qualities of players we have at our disposal are enough to take us to at least the semi-final.

“We have very good players; all we need is a very sound coach that will give the team an identity, a coach that will give the players the freedom to play because recently the Eagles have not been playing with so much confidence. We are not dominating and we are conceding some unnecessary goals, even the midfielders make comical errors and with the world-class strikers that we have, we should be scoring goals.

“I am very sure that the boys will raise their game and at least finish third at the AFCON tournament.”

“Not yet, but that’s what they want me to do,” Rohr replied when asked by our correspondent if he had been sacked by the NFF.
